Charcoal, 2017

Charcoal is an up-and-coming magazine with a heavy design focus. The magazine caters to an 18-35 audience, and aims to promote the importance of experimentation and playfulness in the design field. Much of charcoal’s aim revolves around marrying playful creativity with sophistication, a concept which was heavily considered when designing the masthead. This approach continued into the design of page layouts, which feature clean, minimal-inspired typesetting, with playfulness brought in through the choice of pull quote typeface and utilisation of tip-ins, transparent overlays, and various paper stocks, to give the physical magazine a real tactility that promotes the desire to use your hands and make something. Charcoal is stitch bound, reflecting our love for the hand-made, and features multiple sections in separate mini-booklets, not only to highlight different topics and articles in the magazine, but also to once again promote a sense of tactility
